Come enjoy the unparalleled beauty and pastoral landscapes of the Endless Mountains region by bike this summer! The EMHR and the Rail-Trail Council of NEPA are partnering to host a road cycling event that’s never been done before, as part at the Susquehanna County Hikes & Bikes Series! On Aug. 6, 2022 (with a rain date of Aug. 7), participants in the Viaduct-to-Viaduct Scenic Byway Cycle will embark on a full metric-century ride (just over 60 miles) to a pair of marvelous and fascinating heritage sites here in the Endless Mountains via the Route 92 scenic byway!
Cyclists will gather for registration at the Susquehanna Elementary School grounds (3192 Turnpike St, Susquehanna, PA) the morning of the event. Registration/check-in will begin at 8 a.m. Cyclists will be split into two groups, depending on the number of riders. The first group will begin riding at 9 a.m. and the second at 9:30 a.m.
Cyclists will then leave the school and travel to the nearby Starrucca Viaduct in Lanesboro, then to the Nicholson Bridge (Tunkhannock Viaduct) in Nicholson and back, via South Main Street (SR 171), Turnpike Street (SR 1013) and the PA Route 92 scenic byway through Susquehanna County and Route 11 in Wyoming County.
The route can be viewed and downloaded using this link: https://ridewithgps.com/routes/39362455
Keep in mind, this cycling event is not a race, but rather a scenic ride to showcase these historic viaducts, our picturesque landscapes and the many cycling opportunities in our region. The event is $60 per rider and proceeds will benefit the Rail Trail Council of NEPA, which manages a number of trails in our region, as the Endless Mountains Trail, the O&W Rail-Trail and Pennsylvania’s 2021 Trail of the Year, the D&H Rail Trail.
Following the ride, there will be a reception event for an additional $15 per person held at Iron Horse Brewing (1260 E Main St, Susquehanna, PA) from 4:30 p.m. to 7:30 p.m. A buffet dinner will be provided. Space for the reception is limited, so register now! Feel free to bring family and friends who are at the event to support you on the ride!
We will have radio communications with each group of cyclists and emergency vehicles on standby to ensure the safety of our participants.
Those needing a place to stay the night of or prior to the event can check out our many wonderful accommodations in the area by searching for lodging options here: https://endlessmountains.org/directories/where-to-stay/.
