On Sunday November 13th at 10 am, join D&L educator Jeff Mucklin on a 4-mile bike ride along the Saucon Rail Trail. Along the way, we will look at how the landscape of the Lehigh Valley was sculpted over hundreds of millions of years by geologic forces that have left their mark in the rocks around us; from ancient oceans to primeval swamps to iron furnaces and cement factories we will trace our geologic past and how it impacts our present. Starting at the parking lot in Water Street Park in Hellertown, we will ride to the Upper Saucon Twp. Community Park where we will turn around, pass back through Water Street Park, and end at the Thomas Iron Works site which will be the official end of the tour. You will then be able to make your way back to your car at your leisure or continue your bike ride on your own. As we ride, you can look forward to learning about coal deposits that formed in places similar to modern marsh habitats and how lifeforms living in ancient oceans created fossils. We will see a mystery preserved in the rocks and look at the footprints of dinosaurs. We will end by exploring the ruins of the Thomas Iron Works site, which was one of many iron-producing sites located in our region due to the geologic resources available here. This ride should take about 2 hours. There is a 15-person cap on the group and the event is BYOBH (bring your own bike & helmet).
